Audi Q3 vs. BMW X1

Audi Q3 is more capable sooner than BMW X1. It incorporates quattro all-wheel drive standard. That means you can make the most of turning and pulling power down rough roads and through worse weather alike, and right from the get-go. BMW X1 features xDrive, the BMW-proprietary intelligent all-wheel-drive system, but it's only available with graduation to the xDrive28i trim. That means a bigger investment.

Audi Q3 has a more comprehensive suite of safety systems than BMW X1. It features optional hill descent control as well as a host of available active safety technologies. They range from adaptive cruise assist, which utilizes four 360-degree cameras to help you keep safe distances from traffic, navigate jams, and stay in-lane, to blind-spot and lane-change warning systems, cross-traffic assistance, and park assist. BMW X1 has no distinctive incline management feature; it does have a parking distance indicator option, but no system specifically for assistance parking.

Audi Q3 can better keep you apprised of driving metrics than BMW X1 can. Audi Q3 incorporates a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster to provide the former, and larger 12.3-inch Audi virtual cockpit and virtual cockpit plus systems are available. The latter even has three different selectable views. Moreover, a 10.1-inch touchscreen comes standard to indicate entertainment and connectivity status and more. BMW X1 offers a comparable central information display option, but it measures only 8.8 inches, and its touchscreen measures only 6.5 inches.

Audi Q3 technologies can be more user-friendly and suggest more of a leading edge than those of BMW X1. An MMI navigation plus system with natural-language voice control is available, as is a dialog manager that can ask you questions, allow correction via feedback, offer courses of action, and more. The latter feature's unique to Audi; BMW X1 offers nothing comparable.

Audi Q3 can integrate your lifestyle more seamlessly than BMW X1 can. Audi connect support, for instance, enables review of Google Earth information, lets you connect to the Internet via an available Wi-Fi hotspot, provides local traffic updates, and more. BMW X1 offers similar capabilities via BMW ConnectedDrive Services, but they're slightly less detailed. Plus, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are available, simplifying connecting a smartphone and accessing and using its apps and features in-dash. BMW X1 supports only Apple phones.

Audi Q3 is better-equipped to keep you and your passengers occupied for the duration than BMW X1 is. For example, a 15-speaker, three-dimensional premium audio system from Bang & Olufsen is available, ready to transform any road mix into a trip's soundtrack. The sound system in BMW X1 is only 205 watts and features only seven speakers.
