But for the new Audi A3, they're prominent, from aerodynamic design innovation to high-octane performance and safety technologies to conveniences and creature comforts, and especially so against mainstays of decades-long craftsmanship excellence like BMW 3 Series. Explore the new A3 further here at Audi Temecula, and you'll see what we mean.

Audi A3 vs. BMW 3 Series: A Four Rings Redesign Goes Head to Head with The Ultimate Driving Machine's Minor Update

The latest A3 sedan from Audi appears in a spirited gamut of trims, from Premium and Premium Plus to the fully loaded Prestige at the top of the line. The new 3 Series four-door spans a range from base 320i and 328d through midrange 330i to its own apex, in 330e and 340i trims. Right from the start, however, you'll begin to see A3 pull ahead.

  • For one, Audi broke the innovation mold when it redesigned its lineup of new A3 sedans from the ground up in 2015, and it's seen several updates since, from powertrains to safety to infotainment. The new BMW 3 Series gets only a new touchscreen, standard rearview monitor, LED headlights, and, in a model like 320i, LED fog lights.
  • Though both Audi quattro® and BMW xDrive all-wheel drive systems are optional, A3 remains the sounder, more cost-effective investment. The Audi sedan weighs in around a modest $31,950 MSRP, with its BMW counterpart starting at about $34,900. Add all-wheel drive, and A3 reaches just $34,950 or so, whereas BMW ascends to a more expensive $36,900, approximately.

  • Plus, the new A3 is the sportier, more exciting drive right out the gate. Its standard turbocharged 186-horsepower, four-cylinder 2.0 TFSI® engine, presenting in A3 Premium, puts out up to 221 pound-feet of performance torque. It even becomes a turbocharged 220-horsepower 2.0 TFSI® variant capable of 258 pound-feet in trims equipped with AWD. BMW 3 Series, and its base 320i, makes available only a 180-horsepower, 2.0-liter BMW TwinPower Turbo inline-four and 200 pound-feet. You'll need to ascend to top 340i trim to acquire a 320-horsepower, 3.0-liter BMW TwinPower Turbo inline-six, and at a much greater investment.
  • Looking to go the extra mile? Audi excels BMW in fuel economy, offering up to 26 mpg city, 35 mpg highway, and 29 mpg combined at base. BMW 320i lags somewhat, at up to 23 mpg, 35 mpg, and 28 mpg respectively.
  • A3 also edges out 320i on the safety front, too. It took home a 2018 IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK as well as a Five-Star Overall Crash Test Rating from the NHTSA. BMW 3 Series earned the same, but only received an "advanced" front crash prevention rating versus Audi with one "superior" and "marginal" child seat anchors versus Audi with the higher "acceptable."
