Audi Q5 Goes Head-to-Head with the Acura Competition in Temecula, CA: Which Model Comes Out on Top?

One, ours, underwent a complete redesign for the model year. The other, the new Acura MDX, mostly carried over from 2017. Both are impeccably styled and expertly equipped luxury SUVs that offer an attractive balance of features for nearly any lifestyle. But at the end of the day, only one pulled into victory lane: the new Audi Q5. Check out our competitive comparison!

2018 Audi vs 2018 Acura MDX

  • For one, 2018 Q5 offers the better value. Starting around $41,500 compared to 2018 MDX at approximately $44,200, ours is a more cost-effective option for those looking for cutting-edge technologies and the latest in luxury amenities.
  • It's also better on handling and ride quality, with quattro® all-wheel drive with ultra® technology standard. Its Acura counterpart offers AWD only optionally.
  • The new Q5 is more economical with fuel, providing up to an EPA-estimated 23 mpg in the city and 27 mpg down the highway. The new MDX gets only 20 city mpg.
  • As models of safety go, those of both Audi and Acura stand out. Each earns a TOP SAFETY PICK rating from the IIHS, with available crash prevention systems rated "Superior," and both take home five stars from the NHTSA. However, the passenger side in MDX isn't rated for crashworthiness by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
  • Drivers seem to like comfort levels in the new Q5 better. Its upscale fit and finish speak volume: front seats come eight-way power-adjustable standard, and Alcantara and sport accommodations, front seat heating and ventilation, a heated steering wheel, lumbar support, and memory settings for the driver's side are all available. MDX is similarly and superbly designed for an enjoyable ride, but it's not quite as luxurious, some riders say, and its rear seating's a touch smaller, even with an optional third row.
  • Q5 offers more standard and available convenience, safety, and connectivity technologies. The list is huge, too. It includes 7- and 8.3-inch infotainment systems, an MMI All-In-Touch touchpad that can recognize handwriting, Apple and Android smartphone support, voice command, 10- and 19-speaker audio systems, a rear-view camera, and driver-assistance tech from blind spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert to front and rear park assist and more. These aren't to mention a telematics system from Audi Connect Care, the celebrated 12.3-inch "virtual cockpit," a head-up display, cameras that can monitor 360 degrees of visuals, Wi-Fi capability, and Audi Connect Prime with Google Earth readouts, predictive traffic and weather, app access, and more. Some SUV enthusiasts even tell us the infotainment system in Q5 is easier to use than the dual-screen option in MDX.
